Did you know that Burnham has a Community Orchard? I didn't until a couple of months back.
I was doing a lap of the 1k track around Burnham Park and I was aware of a section of the park I'd not paid much attention to before (there's another post coming soon about the Burnham Park Tree Trail).
Well these trees look quite young, and there was an information board, so I went to see what had occurred and it turns out that it's the Community Orchard!
Long before I started here (2012) local agencies had come together, organised by the Burnham Beeches Rotary Club, to sponsor the planting of different types of tree to make this beautiful orchard. The schools that were involved also got a teaching pack to come and learn about the stages of development of the trees and fruits to enable hands on learning.
I was told the original location the trees were planted in wasn't ideal, so they were moved to their current spot, the north-west side of the park. In 2012 the Rotary also planted an orchard in Farnham Common, which now bears fruits enough to host a yearly Apple Day! Perhaps this will be the goal for Burnham.
This is a list of everyone who sponsored a tree and which variety:
- Lent Rise School - Reverend Wilks Apple
- Our Lady of Peace Catholic Primary & Nursery School - James Grieve Apple
- Priory School - Lord Hindilip Apple
- St Peter’s C of E School - Ribston Pippin Apple
